Komaba Park
Komaba Park is a historically significant park in Meguro Ward that occupies the former estate of the Maeda family, one of Japan's most powerful feudal clans during the Edo period. The Maeda family ruled the wealthy Kaga Domain, and their Tokyo residence was befitting of their status. Today, the park preserves this heritage while serving as a beloved green space for the local community.
The park's grounds retain much of the character of a grand estate, with mature trees, carefully maintained gardens, and historic structures that hint at its aristocratic past. Since opening to the public in 1967, Komaba Park has become a treasured oasis in the densely populated Meguro area.
What to Expect
The park's most notable feature is the Former Residence of the Maeda Family, a beautifully preserved historic building that exemplifies early modern Japanese aristocratic architecture. The surrounding grounds include both a Japanese-style garden with traditional landscaping elements and open lawn areas shaded by magnificent mature trees.
The Museum of Modern Japanese Literature is located within the park, housing an extensive collection of manuscripts, letters, and first editions from Japan's most celebrated modern writers. Walking paths wind through the grounds, connecting the various points of interest. The park's elevated position and mature tree canopy create a sheltered, peaceful atmosphere. A children's playground and open spaces provide recreational opportunities for families.
