Shakujii Park

Shakujii Park is a historic and scenic park in Nerima Ward, centered around two ponds that have been cherished since the Edo period. The park holds particular historical significance due to the presence of ancient burial mounds (kofun) that date back over 1,500 years, as well as its connection to Shakujii Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in the area. The combination of natural beauty and deep history makes this park a uniquely enriching destination.

What to Expect

The park's two ponds, Shakujii Pond and Sanpoji Pond, are its defining features. Row boats are available for rent on Shakujii Pond, offering a leisurely way to enjoy the scenery and observe the ducks, herons, and other water birds that inhabit the area. Cherry trees line the pond shores, creating stunning reflections on the water in spring. The historic Shakujii Shrine sits adjacent to the park, and ancient burial mounds including Himezuka and Tonozuka can be found within the grounds. A playground, open lawns, and walking paths make the park family-friendly, while the tranquil atmosphere around the ponds provides a peaceful retreat from city life.
