Tonogayato Garden

Tonogayato Garden is a hidden gem nestled in a natural valley in Kokubunji City, western Tokyo. Built in the early 20th century as the private garden of a wealthy businessman, the garden makes masterful use of the area's natural topography, with a deep valley carved by the Yahata River creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty and seclusion. The garden is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

What to Expect

The garden's defining feature is its dramatic valley setting, with paths winding through bamboo groves and forested slopes down to a tranquil pond at the base. A natural spring feeds the pond, and the sound of flowing water accompanies visitors throughout. The bamboo forest is particularly atmospheric, with towering stalks filtering dappled sunlight onto mossy paths. A traditional Japanese-style house overlooks the garden, and a deer-scarer (shishi-odoshi) adds a rhythmic acoustic element. The garden is especially beautiful during autumn when the maples turn brilliant shades of red and gold, and in early summer when hydrangeas bloom along the valley paths.
