Best Parks Near Tokyo Station and Marunouchi

Tokyo Station is the entry point to the city for millions of travelers, and the surrounding Marunouchi and Otemachi districts are the heart of corporate Tokyo. What surprises many first-time visitors is how much green space sits within a short walk of the station. If you have an hour between trains, a free afternoon, or simply need a break from the crowds, these are the parks to head for.

Imperial Palace East Gardens

A 10-minute walk from Tokyo Station brings you to the Imperial Palace East Gardens, free to enter and set on the former grounds of Edo Castle. Stone walls, moats, and guardhouses from the castle era remain, and the gardens themselves are meticulously maintained. The Ni-no-maru garden, with its seasonal flowers and pond, is the highlight. It is one of the most rewarding free experiences in central Tokyo.

Hibiya Park

Just southwest of the Imperial Palace, Hibiya Park was Japan's first Western-style public park. Today it offers formal flowerbeds, a large open-air concert arena, fountains, and shaded walking paths. Its location between the Palace and the Ginza shopping district makes it the perfect lunchtime retreat for office workers and a quiet stop on any sightseeing itinerary. It is about a 5-minute walk from Yurakucho or Hibiya stations.

Kitanomaru Park

North of the Imperial Palace, Kitanomaru Park is a calm green space that includes the Nippon Budokan and the Science Museum. Its broad lawns and mature trees make it a peaceful alternative to the busier East Gardens, and the nearby Chidorigafuchi moat is one of Tokyo's most famous cherry blossom spots in spring.

Hama-rikyu Gardens

About 15 minutes on foot south of Ginza (or a short walk from Shimbashi), Hama-rikyu Gardens is a tidal garden where saltwater ponds rise and fall with Tokyo Bay. A traditional tea house sits on an island in the central pond. The contrast between the centuries-old garden design and the surrounding Shiodome high-rises is unforgettable. There is a small entry fee (¥300), but it is well worth it.

Planning Your Visit

  • All four parks are within a 20-minute walk of Tokyo Station.
  • Combine the East Gardens → Kitanomaru → Chidorigafuchi loop for a half-day walking route.
  • Hibiya Park is the easiest quick stop if you're heading to Ginza.
  • Hama-rikyu pairs perfectly with a Tsukiji or Shiodome visit.

These central parks prove that even in the commercial heart of Tokyo, world-class green spaces are never more than a short walk away.
