Kiba Park
Kiba Park is a modern metropolitan park located in Koto Ward, occupying the former site of Tokyo's historic lumberyard district. The name "Kiba" literally means "wood place," reflecting the area's heritage as a center for timber storage and trade during the Edo period. Opened in 1992, the park spans nearly 24 hectares and represents one of Tokyo's most thoughtfully designed green spaces.
The park masterfully blends contemporary landscape architecture with cultural institutions, creating a destination that serves both recreational and educational purposes. Its wide avenues and open plazas give it a distinctly modern feel compared to many of Tokyo's older parks.
What to Expect
Kiba Park is home to the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, one of Japan's foremost institutions dedicated to postwar Japanese and international art. The park grounds feature an impressive fountain plaza, a large sculpture garden with works by prominent artists, and the Urban Greening Botanical Garden showcasing diverse plant species.
The park's broad esplanade provides an impressive sightline toward the Tokyo Skytree, making it a popular spot for photography. Walking and cycling paths wind through beautifully landscaped areas with seasonal flowers and cherry blossom trees. The park also includes playground equipment, open lawns for picnics, and a historic atmosphere with references to the lumberyard heritage found throughout the grounds.
